When I photographed this baby and her mama, the weather and the light were perfect for an outdoor session. This newborn girl and her mom had such a connection. I am so happy that I was able to document their love. A new baby is such a blessing!

This little girl was 7 days old for her newborn photo session. Is there anything more perfect than a sweet, sleeping baby? Her big brother joined in for a few portraits, and I’m so glad we were able to capture them together!

Her grandmother made this hat (and a few other little goodies we used during the session), and it was gorgeous!

He just loves his new baby sister…

Congratulations to this adorable family of FOUR!
I was so excited to photograph my beautiful niece again after I photographed her birth. She was four days old and happy as a clam for her newborn session. I love all her hair, her chubby cheeks, and her beautiful little face. And just just look at her toes peeking out in this first shot…

The quilt she’s lying on was handmade for her by another one of her aunts. I love the colors!

Auntie Leah
I have always loved the poem, “Babies Don’t Keep.” Nothing is so bittersweet as seeing my babies grow up right before my eyes. Lucas is growing up so fast. I blinked, and he turned one. He climbs, he runs, he grows… too fast.
Lucas has elbow dimples. He has 7 teeth, because that other one on the bottom left just won’t come in. When he smiles really big, he crosses his teeth in a funny diagonal way that cracks me up. When he’s really sleepy, he sings what I call the “sleepy song” as his eyes slowly flutter open and closed. He sometimes makes this face where he scrunches up his eyebrows and grins really big, and then he laughs like he knows he looks goofy.
Happy First Birthday to my Lucas, my happy, serious, goofy, beautiful little boy!

Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.
Oh, I’ve grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren’t his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.
The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.
This day had a few firsts for me. It was my family’s first time in New Mexico. We went to visit my husband’s sister and her family, right as she was due to give birth to a baby girl. It was the first time I have photographed a birth. It was also the first time I have been to a home birth (or a water birth). It was a pretty eye-opening experience. My niece was born in the middle of the night, while my boys, my husband, and my sister-in-law’s other two children were all sleeping in the next room. I thought for sure the activity of labor would wake them up, but they all slept right through the birth. Her birth was an amazing, quiet, peaceful experience, and we all fell instantly in love with her. I will treasure the memories and these photographs all my life.
5:05AM. Birth time.

I love how there are five hands on her in this photo.

One minute old. Still purple, still squinting against the dim light, still tethered to her mama by the umbilical cord.

Getting her weight.

Welcome to the world, sweet baby girl. I love you, dear.
